Getting your USA F-1 student visa approved starts with one thing: having the right documents ready. Miss even one, and your application can be delayed or rejected at the embassy. This guide cuts straight to what you need.

Documents You Always Need

These are non-negotiable. Every applicant must submit them.

1. Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility)

Your university or college issues this form after you are accepted. It confirms that you are enrolled in a full-time program at a SEVP-approved institution. You cannot apply for an F-1 visa without a valid I-20. Keep it safe  you will need it at your visa interview and when entering the USA.

2. DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application

The DS-160 is the official US visa application form, completed online through the US Department of State portal. You must fill it in accurately and download the confirmation page with the barcode to bring to your interview. Errors on this form are a common reason for visa delays.

3. Valid Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the USA. Bring both the original and a photocopy of the bio-data page to your visa interview. If your passport expires soon, renew it before applying.

4. SEVIS Fee Payment Receipt (Form I-901)

You must pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee before your visa interview. The fee is currently USD 350 for F-1 students. Keep the payment receipt and bring a printed copy to your interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu.

5. Visa Application Fee Payment Receipt (MRV Fee)

The US student visa application fee (MRV fee) is currently USD 185. You must pay this fee and bring the payment confirmation to your embassy appointment. Without this receipt, you will not be allowed to attend the interview.

6. Visa Appointment Confirmation Letter

After paying your fees and completing the DS-160, book your visa interview at the US Embassy in Kathmandu through the official USVISAS portal. Print your appointment confirmation letter and bring it to the embassy on your interview day.

7. Passport-Size Photographs

Bring two recent passport-size photographs that meet US visa photo requirements – 5cm x 5cm, white background, no glasses, and taken within the last six months. Check the official US Embassy Nepal photo guidelines before getting them taken.

8. Proof of Financial Support

You must demonstrate that you can cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the full duration of your studies. Accepted documents include a bank balance certificate for the past six months, a bank statement, a scholarship letter, or an education loan approval letter from a recognised bank. The amount should match or exceed the costs listed on your I-20.

9. Academic Transcripts and Certificates

Bring copies of your +2, Bachelor’s, or most recent academic transcripts and certificates. These documents show your educational background and eligibility for the program you have been accepted into. Originals and certified copies are both required.

10. English Proficiency Test Score (IELTS / TOEFL / PTE)

Most US universities require proof of English proficiency. Bring your IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE score report to your interview. Some universities waive this requirement if your medium of instruction was English.

Documents You May Need (Additional)

11. Sponsorship Letter

If a relative or sponsor is funding your education, include a signed sponsorship letter along with their bank statements and proof of relationship. The officer needs to see that your sponsor has stable income to support your studies.

12. Scholarship or Financial Aid Letter

If you have been awarded a scholarship or financial aid by your university, bring the official award letter. This significantly strengthens your visa application by reducing the financial burden you need to demonstrate.

13. University Acceptance Letter

While your I-20 is the primary acceptance document, some visa officers also ask for the original admission offer letter from your university. Keep a printed copy in your document folder as a supporting document.

14. Ties to Home Country (Evidence of Intent to Return)

The visa officer needs to be confident that you intend to return to Nepal after completing your studies. Supporting documents include property ownership papers, family ties, a job offer letter, or proof of assets in Nepal. This is one of the most important aspects of a successful F-1 visa interview.
