The USA student visa requirements start with obtaining an F-1 Student Visa issued by the US Embassy. Before applying for the visa, you must first be accepted by a SEVP-certified institution and receive your Form I-20, which is the official document that initiates your visa application process.

Eligibility Requirements

Before preparing your documents, make sure you meet the basic USA student visa requirements. Failing to meet even one condition can result in a refused application.

  Requirement   Details
Acceptance Letter (I-20)   From a SEVP-certified institution only
Valid Passport   Must cover full duration of study program
SEVIS Fee Payment   Form I-901 SEVIS fee must be paid before interview
Clean Criminal Record   Police clearance certificate from Nepal Police
Good Health   Medical exam by US Embassy-approved physician may be required
Financial Proof   Proof of sufficient funds to cover tuition + living costs
Intent to Return   Must demonstrate strong ties to Nepal post-study

Academic Requirements

Academic eligibility is a key part of the USA student visa requirements. US institutions set their own thresholds, but these are the general minimum benchmarks for Nepali students applying to study in the USA.

 Program Level    Minimum Academic Requirement
Associate / Diploma    50–60% in SEE or equivalent
 Bachelor’s    60–65% in +2 or equivalent
 Master’s    Bachelor’s degree with min. 60% or 2.8 GPA
PhD    Master’s degree with strong research background

English Proficiency Requirements

All Nepali students must submit a valid English language test score unless their previous education was entirely in English. Scores must be recent – most institutions accept results within the last 2 years.

 Test    Minimum Score
 TOEFL iBT    80+ overall
IELTS Academic    6.5 overall (no band below 6.0)
 PTE Academic    57+
 Duolingo English Test    105+

Minimum scores vary by institution and program level. Some programs require higher scores.
